Home Tour selects charities for 2012
A drawing was held last week to select the charities that will participate in the 2012 Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour (CHT), scheduled for Columbus Day weekend, October 5-7.
This is the second year a lottery has been used to select the participating charities from those who submitted qualified applications by a pre-announced deadline. This year, thirteen of the applying charities met the Tour’s participation criteria, which include 501c3 tax status, service to the needy that live in the lake area, and an ability to provide volunteers to assist with Tour sponsorship, administration and operation tasks.
Four community leaders each drew two names, one from a basket containing the names of charities located in Franklin County and Roanoke, and one from another basket with qualifying charity names from Bedford County and Lynchburg.
The charities selected as primary participants are as follows:
Bedford Hospice House
Bedford Pregnancy Center
CASA of Central Virginia
Helping Hands of Franklin County
Lake Christian Ministries
SML Good Neighbors
Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center
STEP (Support To Eliminate Poverty)
Two alternates, which would jump in if one of the primary charities became unable or unwilling to participate, were also drawn. 2012 CHT President/CEO Bill Piatt and VP for Charities/Sponsorship Rosemary Drennen each made one selection. Feeding America SW VA and Free Clinic of Central Virginia were the applicants chosen as alternates.
2012 will be the 22nd consecutive year that a charity home tour has been conducted at SML. The effort involves over 1100 volunteers and has donated over $3 million to participating charities.
